The World is doing what they can to help the people of Haiti
2010-01-22  19:40:08
In Trinidad, an event called the Prime Ministers charity golf tournament was very successful. They raised a total of $25 000 which was then given to the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross society, to go towards the funds they are raising to help Haiti. Angela Gouveia of the Red Cross has said that from all that has been donated by their big hearted citizens, they have currently raised a donation of $1.6 million. Machel Montano has said he received a call from Shaggy in Jamaica and Alison Hinds in Barbados. He is going to New York to meet up with them and other international artists to record a song to provide attention to Haiti's plight and raise funds to help. Artists from around the world are getting together to try and help as much as they possibly can, collaborating on tracks and joining for concerts. Rihanna landed in London today for MTVs Hope for Haiti telethon which airs at 1am saturday morning, the likes of Jay-Z and Beyonc’e will also perform. Rihanna said in an interview, In the Caribbean, we think of ourselves as one big family, one country. We're all together. We all represent each other. It's like it happened to Barbados. A figure of 1.5 million people if not more were made homeless last week and now are living under make shift tents. The Haitian government is trying to act quickly as they want to reduce the risk of diseases spreading among the people. There are only 447 camps in Port-au-Prince and approximately 500 000 people are living outside amongst these camps and in the ruins of their collapsed houses. Hope has risen in the hearts of some Haitians after 22 day old baby Elizabeth was found more than a week after the earthquake. There has also been news of a 69 year old woman has just been pulled from amongst the rubble 10 days later. From this news people are still hoping to find friends and family alive. People are praying for another miracle. Haiti you are in our prayers!
