MARTIN “BIG PAPPY” JAY
The Prince of Soca

Martin “BIG PAPPY” Jay  was born in West London November 1970 to a mother born in St Lucia, a Dominican father and Grenadian grandfather giving proof to the fact that he is definitely a product of the Caribbean.

MJ went to school at Burlington Danes and through his teen years was a keen cricketer that represented both London Schools and Middlesex Colts.

MJ’s love for DJing started when he was about 13 years old. Together with his cousin Ian he began buying records and by the time he was 16 he had a more than decent collection of Lovers Rock, Rare Groove and Soul. Just before his 18th birthday MJ’s radio career took off on a local station called Pioneer, he then moved on to WLR which is where he broadcasted for the majority of 1989. It was at WLR that Krazy MD (MJ’s former name) was asked to cover a soca music programme  for his now long time friend  SMOKEY JOE and this is where his interest for soca started to ignite into the massive flame that it is today.

Martin Jay – The Prince of Soca came alive on Sunday 30th September 1990 @ 8pm when he broadcasted his first ever Caribbean Affair show on Choice FM and to this date almost two decades later he is still on Choice FM bringing happiness to thousands of listeners every Sunday evening. MJ can also be heard every weekday morning between 6am and 10am as one half of the breakfast show. This is something that he has been doing since 1997 and is one of the longest standing breakfast show presenters in the UK. Whether he is waking you up with a smile or winding down your weekend with pulsating Caribbean rhythms MJ loves being on radio and making people happy. MJ’s love for the Caribbean is second to none and he believes that this has contributed greatly to the amazing career that he has had as one of Europe’s finest soca DJ’s both on air and in the parties too. Big parties such as COCOYEA, SOCA CITY, COLOURS, SOCA JUMBIE and POISONUK parties are just some of the bigger events that MJ has either helped to promote or has created himself.

One of things that MJ enjoys the most is covering Carnivals and Festivals in the Caribbean and he has been lucky enough to broadcast his show live from St Lucia, Barbados and Trinidad on several occasions and he has also had the chance to experience Grenada, St Kitts, St Vincent, Dominica, The Bahamas and Jamaica. The places that he hasn’t visited are just a matter of time !
